La collaborazione artistica di Ross Birrell (nato nel 1969 a Paisley, Scozia) e David Harding (nato nel 1937 a Edimburgo, Scozia) è iniziata nel 2005 con il film Port Bou: 18 Fragments for Walter Benjamin, presentato in anteprima alla Kunsthalle di Basilea nel 2006.
Birrell, professore e ricercatore senior presso la Glasgow School of Art, utilizza mezzi espressivi diversi tra cui film, scultura, installazione, musica e testi per produrre opere che intrecciano contesti di poesia, filosofia, politica e luoghi.
David Harding ha fondato l'influente Dipartimento di Arte Ambientale della Glasgow School of Art nel 1985. Il suo impegno con l’arte nello spazio pubblico lo ha portato a riconsiderare un'idea di opera che si concentra sul mezzo e considera il contesto come un aspetto equivalente, se non più importante, dell'opera d'arte stessa.
Le opere realizzate Birrell & Harding sono state esposte in mostre e istituzioni internazionali tra le quali: documenta 14, Kunsthalle Basel, Talbot Rice Gallery, Edimburgo, Glasgow International, Galeri Rotor, Göteborg, Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Città del Messico, Portikus di Francoforte, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Beach, Stati Uniti. La loro Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, un concerto per l'apertura di documenta 14, ha coinvolto l'Orchestra di Stato di Atene (ASO) e la Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra (SEPO) ed è stata eseguita nella Megaron Concert Hall di Atene. Il concerto ha costituito la base dell'installazione cinematografica Tryptych, Trinity Apse commissionata per l'Edinburgh Art Festival (2018) e di un recital correlato con il Damascus Quintet della SEPO al Parlamento scozzese (2018).
Poeta e pittore autodidatta, Cucchi è una figura chiave dell'arte italiana fin dagli anni Settanta. Conosciuto per i suoi dipinti altamente espressivi e lirici, continua a esplorare la materialità sperimentando vari media e contesti per espandere i confini del suo lavoro.

Residente a Los Angeles dal 2002, Piero Golia (Napoli 1974) è uno scultore di situazioni. Le sue opere – che a volte prendono forma fisica, spesso su scala architettonica, e altre volte sono immateriali – sono dichiarazioni volte ad ampliare le possibilità dell’arte. La sua pratica è eterogenea e imprevedibile e impiega mezzi e metodi diversi per innescare reazioni a catena che, anche quando non lasciano oggetti o immagini, hanno la capacità di alterare la nostra percezione.

A partire da un’etica dell’economia, Overton impiega materiali quotidiani ed elementari per confrontarsi con un sito, la sua posizione geografica e la sua storia. Tavole di legno, travi, metallo, fango, cartongesso e mattoni - oggetti comunemente associati al lavoro edile o all’agricoltura - vengono tagliati, piegati, impilati e martellati in modo da dare loro forma, spesso spingendo il materiale al suo limite fisico. Gli oggetti utilizzati possono essere recuperati e riciclati da un progetto all’altro, trovati in loco o nei dintorni dello spazio espositivo. Evocando la potenza e la qualità sensoriale della propria materia, le sue sculture e installazioni, attraverso la loro nuova funzionalità, espongono l’energia e le associazioni racchiuse nelle loro parti. «Mi piace che l’opera agisca come un marcatore della sua storia, lasciando che i difetti accumulati si manifestino nei pezzi, e che parli dei modi in cui i materiali sono stati usati».
Virginia Overton è nata a Nashville, Tennessee, nel 1971; vive e lavora a Brooklyn, New York.

Attraverso l’uso di materiali classici della tradizione pittorica ha sviluppato una pratica basata su processi che avvengono nello studio nel tentativo di generare immagini spontanee. Lo studio diventa quindi soggetto e oggetto di una produzione pittorica variegata e che sfocia anche nell’uso di sculture per narrare il quotidiano sforzo di dipingere oggi.
Gianni Politi è nato a Roma dove vive e lavora. Il suo lavoro in diverse istituzioni in Italia e all’estero tra cui: La Galleria Nazionale, Gallerie nazionali Barberini Corsini, Nomas Foundation, Maxxi, Macro a Roma; Triennale di Milano; Fonderia Battaglia, Milano; Palazzo Zino, Palermo; Istituto di cultura italiana, Praga; Celeste Prize, New York.
Il linguaggio scultoreo di Monika Sosnowska emerge da un processo di sperimentazione e appropriazione di materiali da costruzione come travi d’acciaio, cemento, tondini di ferro e tubi. Questi elementi – le solide e rigide fondamenta degli edifici – sono manipolati e deformati, assumendo un’indipendenza in cui la loro precedente funzionalità è implicita ma annullata.
Nelle sue opere recenti, Sosnowska ha incorporato elementi dell’architettura modernista e dettagli riconoscibili come scale, corrimano, cancelli e strutture di finestre per creare incontri inaspettati, persino inquietanti. Tratta gli edifici come un luogo della memoria ed è in grado di trasmettere un significato politico e psicologico attraverso il suo lavoro. L’artista cita le irregolarità architettoniche, mettendo insieme elementi diversi per formare un insieme che appare allo stesso tempo confuso, ma intenzionalmente progettato in modo attraente. Lo spazio viene percepito come una qualità psicosomatica, tanto politica quanto personale, che oscilla sempre nella mente dello spettatore tra il perturbante e il sublime.
